Newport IOW Rock Festival 2009

Friday 12th June - Sunday 14th June

Report and photos by Geoff Turner

This year's line-up didn't have the big names of previous years, but Newport was still buzzing with plenty of people. I arrived on Thursday to get an inside berth in Newport Harbour, followed by Foca who tied up rather too close to a noisy catamaran full of pirates. More Parkers and Seals arrived on Friday and by Saturday there were 10 boats.

As usual, the weather on Saturday was perfect for sitting in the sun. In the evening, we had drinks on the quay, with entertainment kindly provided by the Red Arrows. As BBQ's weren't allowed on the river bank this year, we went to Pizza Express instead, before walking down to hear Razorlight and Stereophonics.

On Sunday morning, we had a new experience - a barbeque breakfast on the quay. Most boats left the harbour on the afternoon tide, a couple anchoring in the river to wait for Simple Minds. The festival was brought to a close with a good set by the veteran Neil Young.

Boats attending: Cleo, Dawn, Foca, Niquaydi, Red Seal, Sea Lady, Speedwell, Sunflower, Tilikum, Vol au Vent.
