Dear all
Everyone at Itchenor SC is looking forward to welcoming you on Saturday. Here are some notes and guidance.
Navigation: if you’re not familiar with Chichester Harbour do consult the pilot book! For those that are, be aware that LW is 1610 so you will be punching ebb all the way. The worst is easily avoided in a Parker or Seal by keeping well out of the marked channel but if you are approaching Itchenor around LW don’t play too loose with the starboard hand buoys approaching the Itchenor Fairway: you should be fine inside two but perhaps not the innermost one unless you have a hand on the keel and an eye on the depth. The Club is the third set of jetties right after the shingle hard and harbour office. You can choose from one of four big white visitors’ buoys just downstream of the club (I’ll hopefully put Blue Moon on one to be sociable and help identify them) where we can raft up as required, or you can head a few hundred yards further upstream past the new small-boat pontoon and tie onto the visitors’ pontoon (NB it is not walk-ashore, and the further end is reserved for local boats). The club ferry will be available to bring you ashore: if you can’t attract his attention do call the office on 01243 512400 and they will send him out to you. If you’d rather bring your tender ashore please use the small upstream tender pontoon if the tide allows and it hasn’t been taken away yet (we’re rebuilding the jetties at the moment). If it isn’t available use the main jetty and bring the dinghy up the wooden ramps onto the stage.
Saturday: lunch will be available in the club and Paul is planning a walk out to East Head in the afternoon to enjoy the views and the wildlife, and to work up an appetite for the obligatory Itchenor Tea. The bar is open all afternoon, and we’ll plan to meet for drinks on the lawn from 6 before an informal club supper. Please email me peter@the-nursery.net with numbers for supper by noon on Wednesday. The ferry runs until 6.30pm but I have arranged to borrow it to ferry you back to the boats (on condition of staying mildly sober). There are of course showers (and baths if you know where to look).
Sunday: breakfast is served from 0815. I’ll have use of the ferry from then, but will heading off to East Head by boat soon after with some young friends for a bucket and spade expedition which children of any age are very welcome to join! If you are staying on (for instance to join the Dell Quay trip on Tuesday) you are very welcome to use the club all day but note that it closes at 7pm and there is no supper. Luckily The Ship in the village is a two-minute walk and has good food and beer; it might be wise to book. NB there are no shops in Itchenor, or indeed any of the harbour villages except Emsworth (although I dare say Philip Lindsell knows of a ditch you can crawl up to a farm shop that opens for an hour at high water).
If you have any questions at all, or bright ideas, do email me and don’t hesitate to phone for help/advice/ferrying on the day: 07976 951177.
