It maybe the rope is a bit worn, but still think it ought not to happen. Other than fitting a rope jamber (expensive!), I haven't really seen anything that grabs me as much as I want it to grab the rope.

I have had no problem with the rope slipping but I did not really like the long length left in the cockpit so for this season I have bought a Barton stanchion cleat around which I will loop the surplus line. It should also hold the rope jamber (I do not have a jamb cleat) in a straighter line which might improve the holding power.

Thanks, The cleat looks a possibility, presumably you can't line the cleat up with the rope pull or it would twist around the stanchion, and it would have to be really tight to avoid slipping down if the pull was down the Stanchion. However it should work as a backup and its quite cheap
