I am looking to replace the guard rails on Redshank (Parker 275) as they were last replaced, as far as I can tell, in 2013 and they are plastic covered which I dislike because it can hide corrosion. Stanchions are the original spec which I think is aluminium part no YS-7165B and I am wondering: a) what was the original spec for the guardrail size and composition of the steel wire? b) what is the maximum diameter steel wire that I could use in pace of the plastic-covered wire? I am concerned that the stud fitting swaged onto the wire will not fit through the holes in the stanchion if the diameter of the wire is big enoughto be comfortable to hold on to. c) has anyone tried dyneema instead and how did you get on?

I replaced the wires on my superseal with dyneema last year, I found it easy to splice and install. I used black 4mm dia (rated at 1 tonne) would probably go for 5mm next time, if there is one.

I have replaced the old plastic covered 4mm wires on our Parker 27 with new 1x 19 4mm s/s wires without cover.
Being more concerned about abrasion or electrolytic action between wire and the alloy stanchion I have hedged my bets with a short double layer of shrink sleeving at each stanchion. The original holing in each stanchion seems quite large considering the section involved
When climbing aboard I hold a stay and then the handrail on the coachroof so haven't found the wire too thin .
