I have just returned from a second weeks cruising in Sparky, this time from Plymouth to Exmouth and back. I was particularly interested to note the speed registered on the nasa log. The maximum i achieved in the week, which was on a run, was 5.2 knots. The average over the week was about 4 knots.

As i am joining a friendly end of season club race with some of my friends in september i am wondering what averages and maximums other P21 owners have experienced......

My fastest passage was last year's sail from Fishguard to Aberystwyth - I averaged 6.5kn over the ground for the 40 miles, on a broad reach in F6 with just the genoa. There was more tide with me than against, but also quite a swell so I was frequently surfing. An exhilarating sail that I'll remember for a while!

I think the key to a good average speed is to keep sailing downwind!
