This will be discussed and decided at the AGM, but the proposal is Parker & Seal Sailing Association and the flag I have also proposed is -

UserPostedImage

This keeps the distinguishing colours of the 'old' association but indicates Parkers and Seals are of equal standing.

As I am not due back in the Country until the Saturday of the AGM weekend, I may also not make the meeting if there is any delay with my flight. However, in case this happens I voted by proxy, so as this is important, could I suggest you do likewise.

There should have been a form with your last Newsletter.

I rather like the association name the way it is. (SSA)
Why make it more wordy?

I get lots of enquiries as to what the burgee is when I fly it.
Put words on it and it's just a boat manufacturers flag.

Just my humble opinion....!!

Yes - you are entitled to attend the AGM and vote.

John

We are close to having a 50/50 balance of Parker and Seal owners and as no Seals have been built for 23 years, Seals will soon be outnumbered by Parkers.

The committee has a concern that only about half the new Parker owners joining the SSA, and word is that that a number would rather join a Parker association or ask why should they want to join a Seal association, and similar....

Also, it didn't help to read an article in one of the recent Sailing Mags which talked at length about the Seal Sailing Association and Seal boats, and almost as an afterthought stated that Parker owners can also apply to join.

What we don't want is for anyone with a strong feeling about this setting up a Parker Owners Association - which has been muted.

Final thought - Bill Parker has been building final model Seal 26s and Parker boats for over 25 years, and is one of the very few independent family boat builders left in the UK. Don't you think we should give him some recognition also?

Anyway John, as member you are entitled to cast your vote as you wish. So please do so as we need as many members as possible to express their opinions at the AGM.

I have no problem with the name of SSA as such, but I feel with the ever growing number of Parker built boats we should try to encourage more of them to join our association. At present the number of 235 owners that have joined is small. I sense that many just ignore us because they don't look further than the name, which is a shame. Taking a long term view as a member of the SSA, it would be foolish for us not to recognise that the Parker boats are the growing sector of our membership, and we need to encompass them within the association. As to whether the name change will help, its anyone's guess, but I think we need to try.

Does Bill enclose infomation on the SSA with new boats ???

I'm sure that any new Parker owner is more likley to join the SSA if the name changed ......as others have said...

My feeling is, if the name change can help prevent a split in the association then we should accept the proposal. It is good to keep the Seal name and emblem as a reminder as to the origins of the association and the Parker boats. I think I sent back my proxy papers!!

When we bought our boat, Parkers had a selection of SSA Newsletters on display in the reception. We were given a copy and recommended to join.

Yes new members should receive at least the following three items

1 - A Membership Application form to the SSA
2 - A booklet on the history of the SSA and evolution of Parker boats, that I based on the membership handbook.

3 - A 'Welcome Brochure' produced by Ken Surplice

The new member welcome pdf file needs a small amount of updating with the committee and area officers info.

I know - it was produced in 2004/5.

I could do the changes you have indicated but we really need a completely new issue.

Hello Folks, I am catching up on forum topics after much work travel this year and wanted to inform you about a few things that have happened and will happen concerning the association name. First, at the AGM, the collection of voters and postal votes were in favour of the proposal to 1 - rename us to the Parker & Seal Sailing Association, and 2 - retain the current burgee (which you see top left on this page).

Don has already mentioned that Parkers are once more including the Seal on the mainsail by default. This is great news and we are very happy that Bill Parker has taken this action.

We have also just produced an updated brochure to recruit Parker owners. Don will post a copy on our web site shortly. We will also send copies to our area officers, or anyone else that wants some. By the end of this month, we'll have two more brochures to recruit non-members of Seals and Parkers respectively. Feel free to print these and do some recruiting, or send your suggestions for improvement to me. I am all ears!

Next, we will be starting a campaign to get some new attention in the Press. Of course, all publicity is good publicity, but we are specifically trying to reconnect with owners who are not members.

Finally, at least for the moment, we also want Press support to promote one rally per region that will specifically targeted at recruiting new members.

If you have other ideas, let's hear them [:)].

Cheers-Ken
