I am investigating using bulbs with LEDs for nav. lights.eg in AquaSignal. The potential saving of battery ampere.hours is significant:- 4W or less versus 25W for tricolour (and 10W for steaming/anchor light).

Replacement bulbs are available ex internet electronics specialists at prices from £16 to £25 ea. I am concerned about a. brightness/range and b. directionality, leds emit light in a specific direction in a cone.

Has anyone tried these?

I have heard that the spectral characteristic of a 'white' LED is subtly different from natural light. Your starboard hand light will not look green, unless you use 'green' LEDs for this sector. I have also heard that the light is very harsh and fatiguing if used for below decks illumination.

Cheers! Neil
