I'm trailing a 6M - 300mm draft sailing boat in early May to Morbihan and would be very grateful to receive any suggestions regarding launch/mooring sites (and likely costs)and any "must do" tips, trips etc.(I'm also contactable on Tel.01243 573421 if more convenient)thanks in anticipation - Clive Gamage - Bosham.

We trailed a Skipper 17 to the Morbihan in 1999 and launched from the large marina at Port Crouesty which is just outside the mouth of the Morbihan. It has a very large narina and plenty of room for leaving trailers. I am not sure of prices but we went there by boat in 2006 in Speedwell (Parker 275), and I think it was quite reasonable.

Once there the only challenge is going in and coming out of the Morbihan - it is the only place I know where the sea goes downhill! However it is not as daunting as it sounds and is great fun being swept along at about 12 knots!

The Morbihan is a great place to explore with lots of bays but too many moorings - we ended up picking them up which is what the French seem to do - never paid anything!

I am sure you will have a great time. Let me know if you need any more info. (The Auray river is great but also has very fast tides)

Yes charts should be available at the chandlers at the marina - they will be in French but that doesn't really matter.

Cheers

Before you go, try to get hold of and read a copy of one of the greatest period sailing books ever written: "Oyster River" by George Millar.

Millar was an ex SOE man (two books also written about that-"Horned Pigeon" & "Maquis") who is injured horse-riding and spends a recuperative summer sailing the Morbihan while having brushes with French Algerian terrorists.

A bit old fashioned (the trip must have been about 1958 or 1959 as it was pre Algerian independence in 1960) and unrelentingly uppercrust, but beautifully written and descriptive.

The Morbihan is utterly delightful but incredibly busy. Moorings everywhere, but challenging pilotage because of the raging tidal streams.
Get a copy of "Livre a Bord", (the French Reeds), in French, but very useful!
