Hello, I have developed a rather loud clanking noise when winding up the keel, it starts at about 70% of the way up and gets louder as it rises. Any advice please? should I be worried?.

Its been a bad year for boat problems as well as weather!

Cheers

Hi David

My keel used to do this sometimes, I believe it was the bronze nut tapping against the inside of the steel tube. My screw is not PERFECTLY straight. Now I have fitted my electric motor and this has added a further 2 bearings on the forward end of the shaft it tends to be less noticeable.

Do you think its nothing to worry about then.

Make sure there is plenty of grease on the screw thread and also in the forward ball thrust bearing by the handle.
