I recall seeing an article long ago of a board for towing with mackerel hooks.
Does anyone have the details, or one I could copy?

Hi Philip,

I have two ready made paravanes on board. My favourite is a chunky design from France. These alternatives from Flacen also work well and are inexpensive:

Also step by step instructions here

Once you know they are called paravanes, you can find many references on the web.

Hi Phillip,
Bought a plastic paravane from a fisherman running a stall selling an amazing selection of fishing gear at the famous Lymington Saturday market several years ago. It was a fraction of the price of similar ones available at local chandlers and fishing tackle shops! He had specialist knowledge, and great prices! He guaranteed success! It works really well with 6 hooks attatched. The best fishing areas we have found in the Solent are between Yarmouth and Lymington and down near the Needles or out near Bembridge Ledge. Around Poole harbour entrance is another good area. Boat speed needs to be very slow and not a fast running tide. Wafting along with the genoa up only seems to get the best results. We are not a fishing family but we eat quite a lot of fish. Fresh mackerel is hard to beat. Also treat yourself to a filleting knife. Gets much better results the the bread knife we used to use.

Best wishes

David

Thanks for the help.
Next challenge is to adapt for beach casting and walking along with an angle to keep it moving along!
