I would like some help regarding the stern tube I have on my boat, lady tiki. I have unfortunately split the stern tube on my boat, this I suspect has been caused by excessive weigh being placed on the shaft when grounding in an awkward position. I have ready made a skeg plate waiting to be added to the vertical part of the skeg to keep the prop higher off the mud/ sand when grounding.

My plan is to have her lifted out of the water this weekend to asses what to do and the full extent of the damage and at the same time modifying the skeg with the new grounding plate.

Has anybody split a stern tube before?

Are there similar stern tunes available to buy as a replacement?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear of your problem .

Quite honestly I was not impressed by the strength of the skeg on Blue moon when she was out of the water so always support her under the stern tube when in the yard. Having said that the skeg has never let me down when grounding, usually burying itself in the mud. I would suggest you get a beefier one made up.

When I bought Blakeney Seal the skeg had been strengthened by the addition of a stainless steel cap. I have (I hope!) attached a photo which may give you food for thought. I hope this helps.

Hopefully you can see the original problem with the prop buried, one showing the changes I made and one showing how she now sits clearof her prop. Only time will tell if this is a long term solution.

I have read with interest your posts about making a larger skeg for Lady Tiki. I bought Shemar in July (a Parker 335) and I have a similar wish to make a larger skeg, so I would like to speak to you about it. I think it might be useful anyway if we were to compare notes about our experience of the 335 as we are both new to the boat. I am planning on replacing the carpet headlining this winter as it has come down and also the toilet. I have just taken out the ram and changed the anode which was an interesting exercise, to say the least! The instructions on the website from Don Harvey in 2007 while useful, didn't really apply to Shemar so I have typed up a new set of instructions to refer to in the future as I think the design must have changed slightly for later boat numbers.

Further information on a Skeg for Parker 325/335

Following Jack's drawings of a skeg he had made fro Lady Tiki, I had a local company make a similar skeg fore me

Lady Tiki appeared to replace the complete skeg, whereas I had a boot made to bolt onto the original skeg.
