Hello, we’re Ed and Fran and new owners of 235 Jupiter. We’re planning our first trip by road to a Chichester Harbour with Jupiter and plan to hopefully sail in the area for the remainder of the season.

Being our first visit, we’d really appreciate any suggestions or recommendations on good places/ boat yards to launch and raise the mast and places to sail and moor after that.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

There are several sites around the harbour for launching, I use Thornham Marina near Emsworth, they have a sublift for the boat and Murlo crane for the mast, excellent service, leaving is limited to close to high water.

Less craft afloat means there are moorings available just about everywhere in the harbour, plenty of shore sites for the tender too.

Hi Ed and Fran,

If you want to launch on your own without boatyard assistance and crane, I'd recommend the public slip way at Dell Quay, best to avoid on busy weekends when the sailing club are launching their dinghies and safety boats. It's also a great place to anchor and spend the night with a great pub by the slipway.

Other places I'd recommend visiting are Bosham (you'll have to dryout) and Emsworth (you can use the jetty, which does dryout at low water, for up to 4hrs but there's a fee) or further out in the Emsworth Channel in deeper water there's the visitors pontoon (I'd only recommend if you have a motorised tender). Both places have nice pubs and resturants. Emsworth is bigger and has supermarkets too. Emsworth is easy to get to on the train too and also has a public slipway.

Also, highly recommend beaching the boat at East Head behind the dunes, or nipping out of the harbour and sailing to Bembridge on the IoW.

Hello Philip and Manuel, thank you so much for responding to our post it was very kind of you both. We will certainly follow your advice and have decided to head to Thornham Marina first but unfortunately the Murlo crane is not operational so we will need to lift the mast manually ourselves.

If any members have any tips or advice for newcomers on raising the mast on the Parker 235 any suggestions the best way would be most welcome. If anyone is around Thornham Marina on Tuesday morning and would like to join us in raising the mast you would be very very welcome 😅

If you're looking for a mooring for the rest of the season it would be worth calling Sam the Moorings Officer at Chichester Harbour Conservancy.

They often have short term availability, and sometimes can accommodate boats at short notice if you are prepared to be moved from mooring to mooring as the owners are away. Sam is very helpful and will advise on your options - they have moorings in various locations. If nothing's available you may be able to berth on the midstream visitors' pontoon at Itchenor at monthly rates, but that is more expensive than a mooring. Be sure to mention how small and shallow you are - that will widen your options!

Thank you everyone for your support, it's been really good to hear from you. In the end, Thornham couldn't step the mast when we arrived due to staff holidays but across the road Emsworth Yacht Harbour were fantastic having arrived on a trailer at 3.00 in the afternoon were floating in the marina by 11.00 the next morning - the staff were really helpful and friendly. We had a busy time sorting the boat but have just had a lovely week sailing (and cycling on the windy days!) around Emsworth and the Harbour.

Thank you Peter for mentioning Sam the Moorings Officer, we spoke to him and plan to take a swinging mooring at the start of season. Thank you as well Peter L for the PSSA details, we weren't able to make the earlier events but will definitely try and join in with the group soon.

Thanks again to everyone, we are so happy with our 235, she sails beautifully, especially in 2s and 3s for a gentle but swift sail.
