Hi all

Has anyone had experience of fitting alternative engines in the 325/335 ? I am contemplating the possibility as I am scared of what we might find if the 2gm20 is stripped. Space fore and aft seems rather limited for most engines which are nearly all 3 cylinders now.

The Beta 25 has been suggested as my local chandlery is an agent and it does seem to be the most lkely to fit without serious modification.

Jan,

Have noticed that you have not had a reply?

Quite simply, I suspect, that is because I (and probably other 325/335 owners) are not sure what to say to you on this issue....?

I think, if I was in your position, I would stick with the type of engine the boat was designed to have / was builder fitted with.

Anyway, I would be delighted to know how you have got on?

Kind Regards,

Stuart

Hello Stuart

Thanks for replying to my post.

Maybe some background required, our Yanmar 2GM 20 is becoming a poor starter and we know one of the cylinder compressions is well down, obviously it is not certain that the engine need renewing but it is getting on a bit now and the question is, how much money is it worth throwing at an old engine of a type which is now obselete. I suspect several 325 engines are now getting a bit tired and wondered if other owners had replaced them and what they had done as space is limited and any replacement engine is almost certain to be longer.

I have spoken to a couple of suppliers of alterntive power units who confidently state that their units have been fitted to the 325/335 but I have been given no references !

So I was asking if anyone has replaced the Yanmar 2GM20, if so with what and how the installation went?

Hi Jan

As you know , we have a 3YM with a minor change which only intrudes by a very small amount into the aft cabin (you have the pic now). We have just motored (because of weather/time/crew restraints) from the Itchen to Weymouth (new berth) and it was nice to have the 3 cylinders and decent power.

Hi Jan,

Have you replaced your engine yet?

If not I have a Yanmar 3GM30F in my boat and this seems to fit very well and delivers good steady power.

I also have a contact in Cornwall (Cellar Marine of Helston) who would be able to advise you of the best route to take or if you wanted could rebuild your engine to an as new condition. They specialise in Yanmars and I have found them to be excellent in both their knowledge, price and service.

Hello David

Thanks a lot for the information, does the 3GM30 intrude into the aft cabin ? I would have thought it would be a tight fit.

Also thanks for the contact a refurb might be an option, the 2GM20 manages in most conditions but is a reluctant starter if left for a few days . Whilst are local chandlery would like to tell me it is knackered and sell me a new unit, I am coming to the conclusion that there is a minute air leak into the fuel system as restarting within a day is usually OK. I might be faced with a choice, new sails or new engine. So the Yanmar might have to go on for a bit.

Hi Jan,

No it doesn't really intrude at all I could send you a picture if it helps.

You could always ring the guy at Cellar Marine - his name is John and may be able to give you some clues on the reasons your engine is difficult to start.

Regards

David

Hello David

Thanks for the mention of Cellar Marine , I spoke to them and found them very helpful with several usefull suggestions, plus they were not trying to condem my engine over the phone. Also their price for a complete refurb was far more attractive than buying a new alternative unit.

Can you send a picture of the 3GM30 installation, does it protrude into the aft cabin at all, nominally it is about 80mm longer than the 2GM20.

Hi Jan,

Glad you made contact with John. I bought a rebuilt 2GM from him earlier this year and it is an excellent rebuild probably better than the original and a great deal cheaper than a new engine. I'm cruising in France at the moment so will take some pics of the engine and email them to you after 17th July.
