Good afternoon to you all!
I sail my Seal 22(72) at Thurrock yacht club on the Thames. We race every Thursday evening in the summer(tide permitting) and occasionally at weekends. My problem is my handicap under Byron which is 1095.This just brings me into the top class of yachts in the club, and I struggle to be competetive. Is this handicap correct, and can I challenge it?
Ever hopeful!

At Southend (Combined Cruiser Series) we rate yachts on actual performance so if race results are consistently low then the PY number will be adjusted.
The PSSA handbook lists the Seal 22 with a PY number of 1150. Check what your club allocate to other Seal class boats and if they are similar to those published in the PSSA handbook use this as an argument that yours should also be similar to the PSSA published PY number.
The RYA 2011 PY lists the 22 with a PY of 1221 (they note this is "low confidence" which means there have not been many results to compare)
You can view the RYA 2011 figures on the RYA website and also here.

There is no harm done in writing to your race committee and producing evidence to challenge your allotted handicap.
Personally I think you have an excellent case, 1095 is way off.

Many thanks Mike for such a quick reply.
I'll progress this issue and keep you informed as to what happens.
Happy sailing,
