Hi,

I am looking for a new auto-pilot and, as it will be a sizeable expense, I am looking to you guys and Gals to put me on the right course. (Pun intended)

What do you have, are you happy with it, what would you like, etc?

Regards

Robby

Hello Robby,

I think there are only two to choose from: Raymarine and Simrad. I have the former. There's not a lot of difference. The Raymarine has a display, which is useful to confirm it's in the mode you think it's in. It can also take a NMEA 0183 input from a GPS to allow it to steer to a waypoint, if you like that sort of thing.

I gather neither are properly waterproof and so should be protected from rain and spray (amazing, isn't it?).

Apart from that, it's an excellent device and, obviously, especially for single-handing.

Hi Anthony,

You made some good points. I only want one so I can grab a bit of kip when single handing.

I am not really into waypoints as I am mainly a traditionalist as regards navigation.

GPS is great for a back up but you can't beat the paper charts and astro nav with my sextant.
