Well done Paul - good engine!

It takes 450ml of 4 stroke engine oil - depends on operating range temp etc but FWC 10W - 30/40 rated SF, SG, SH or SJ suits. There is a recommendation chart in the handbook, so check that.

I use Rock Oil, but I don't think the make matters.

Just note my posting on "What's this for" regarding the port rail however..

Out of interest Paul, did you go for another long shaft unit or are you converting to the short shaft set-up of the newer 235's?

Yeah I did go for the long shaft....I don't have the longer rudder stock which gives more clearance under tiller.

I thought I would have to cut the rail...

I'm going to make an emergency outboard "board" because I have a 2.5hp Suzuki that is usually on-board and it doesn't go deep enough on the standard board.

On the subject of definitive....

Those with Tohatsu 5/6 hp engines. Which of the tilt holes do you use to set the angle of the engine when cruising? I left mine at the default angle of one hole, but it seems inclined a little too far aft when I see it on the trailer.

David - I put mine on the end hole, ie: most vertical.

I have not used the forum before so I will apologise in advance for getting it all wrong.

I bought a Tohatsu 5hp SHORT SHAFT engine with a remote tank and the recommended high torque prop recommended for the 235.My 235 is Last Orders Hull 39.I tried to fit the engine and I could not get it low enough for all the prop and anticavitation plate to come out of the bottom of the hull.I made a number of boards of varying depths to try and make it work.Bruce Parker suggested that I cut off the port slider but that still does not look as if it will drop the engine enough.Since my boat was built there have been changes made to the engine opening and the rebate at the cockpit floor level.

I think that I really need a long shaft for my boat.Anyone interested in my short shaft, bought new on Dec 6th 2005 and not started since ie it is as new.It has the charging option fitted.

Hello Nick

Welcome too.

You might try part exchanging the engine (I had a good deal from Extreme Marine doing this).

There is a Tohatsu 5hp 4-stroke longshaft complete with tank etc on ebay for £295 as a "buy it now". If the engine is in reasonable condition that is a very good price. If it does not have the saildrive prop just swop it with yours before you sell your current engine.

Hi everyone,

I am another novice contributor to the forum. I took delivery of Aquarius, Parker 235/60 in September and have found all the discussion on the forum of great interest and help, both prior to placing an order and subsequent to taking delivery.

I have the 6hp Tohatsu shortshaft engine with saildrive prop and I have set the tilt angle at the first hole, so that the engine is mounted on the board in a vertical position. It does appear however that when under power quite a lot of "wash" comes to the surface of the water behind, which probably suggests a partial loss of thrust, and perhaps a longshaft may be more efficient. On the other hand, I still seem to have quite good drive even at just half throttle which is about all that I can use due to running in the engine.

Thought I would just throw in my observations on this subject.

Hi Simon - welcome to the Forum - hope you'll enjoy it, I've found it a very useful 'part' the whole 235 experience!

Interesting what you say about wash, I also have a deal of wash breaking the surface which appears to be inefficient but the boat makes good progress nevertheless.

As far as the anti-cavitation plate position in relation to the hull is concerned it looks to be in line with the Tohatsu instruction manual which says it should be 30mm - 50mm....if anything it is lower than that. (Mine is short shaft).

Hello Simon,

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase. Just ask if you have any questions, we will all do our best to help. I guess you have not had much chance to sail as the season is drawing to a close. Where abouts will you be sailing ?

Just got my Honda 6HP 4 stroke services along with the little 2.3HP I use on the tender. £226.07! Makes the Honda 5 year warranty look expensive.

Hi Graham and others,

Thanks for your messages of welcome and yes, you are correct in that I have not been able to get out much. Due to family commitments I have in fact only been out once but was very impressed with the performance, although we only had about a force 2.

The boat will be based at Tollesbury Marina on the Blackwater in Essex but we hope to trail, perhaps to the West country and may be to the Clyde or the Norfolk Broads - plans have yet to be made.

I am sure that in time I will have many questions and will make good use of the vast experience of the forum members.
