We have just bought a radio for our 235.

The aerial and cable is already fitted and runs as far as the switch panel, but I would welcome any advice on where to site it and where to run the cable/s. Is it best to mount it in the cradle/bracket supplied or cut a hole in the bulkhead and have the rear part project into the locker?

My first thoughts are to put it just inside the boat on the port side, somewhere above the chart table.

I think the locker would be to damp....you would need to protect the back from knocks and damp...

Where mine is I can see at a glance the channel it is on. I can also just about reach the mic from outside.

I disconnect mine in the winter and leave it at home...which is easy to do on the bracket and the wires just plug in.

Have you got your new mast sorted out ???

My radio (an Icom 421) is mounted to the right of the switch panel and cut into the above-seat locker. It seems a sensible location, and I cannot think of anywhere I would prefer to have it. I cannot help with the wiring because it was Bill Parker who put it there, but there does seem to be quite a few wires behind it!

Now that I have seen Paul's post, I realise that my locker opening does not go as far aft as his which is how my radio can fit in with wood all around.

Yes, I have got my new mast - many thanks to the insurers and Bill. When I work out how, I will post some pictures - they should raise a few smiles and add to the debate about the best way to take down a mast!!
I expect to have it sorted and up ready to sail soon - certainly at some point over Christmas. It just seems lately that the weekdays are fine and the few days that I could have done it at the weekend are rainy!!

I fitted a VHF Radio on a shelf made from a piece of aluminium
angle 6" x 3" x 1/4" cut to about 200mm , black anodised and bolted
through the bulkhead high up at the end of the port bunk,it is connected to a garmin chartplotter on a RAM swivel mount.This means I can view the screen from inside or outside and reach in to the radio mike if neccessary.I have a few photos but wasn't successful in attaching them.

Graham - what a neat GPS installation!

I have same Garmin unit, it was mounted outside last season but sunlight a problem and when at anchor it's better to be able to monitor depth so I'm currently moving it inside.

I was going to make a ply swivel bracket but you call yours a 'RAM' bracket - is this easily available, and from where?

Sorry for delay , away from my pc for a couple of days.I searched
http://www.gpsw.co.uk 
part no RAM-109V-2.I discovered that there are wires for the starboard side cabin lights running close to the 'edge' where the holes for the bracket were drilled so take care when drilling whatever bracket you use.I have found it useful as it extends far enough to enable you to sit down inside when when putting in your route for the next day.
