Every time I change the fuel filter I curse the terrible access.

The filter is fitted on the starboard side of the access to the stern gear, just aft of the raw water inlet. It's a struggle to get a container under it to catch the spilt fuel and I have to almost stand on my head to get at the release bolt and bleed bolt on the top of the unit. Worse still is changing the O rings..

I assume Parkers put the filter there because they couldn't find somewhere better and I can't see anywhere else that looks promising.
I guess an other possibility is changing to a spin-on filter if I can find one short enough to fit.

Has anyone come up with a smart solution to the problem ?

Hi Martin

When the guys installed my new engine they ran a new fuel pipe from the stopcock down by the propshaft up to a new filter in the engine compartment (on the port side of the compartment). It's easy to see the water separation bowl and to drain it if necessary, and a doddle to change the filter. Even I could do it! (Admire my honesty, I said could rather than have).

I agree, it's a misery. I drilled a hole in the GRP, directly above the filter bolt which lets me get a socket down there easily to loosen and tighten. Between (extensive) service periods, the hole is taped over. I have taken to double-bagging the entire filter assembly, loosening the top bolt and dropping the whole gubbins into the bag for sorting out somewhere less crampy. So far, no spillage. I have no miracle answer to the tiny wee o-ring though

Yes Dirk, that's like mine. I have moved the water strainer to the rear of the engine compartment above the water line where I can get to it any time.

Sounds very sensible. I will certainly consider this for Surprise.
