Both Margaret and myself are finding that the bunk cushions, while made to last, are a little firm these days. Must be advancing old age!

I am thinking of drilling some holes in appropriate spots (hips and shoulders) to soften them up a bit. Has anyone tried this sort of thing before?. I suppose I could partially drill through (from the bottom?) leaving an inch (at the top) to strengthen it.

The alternative might be to get them refilled with Latex/Dunlopillo but drilling holes would be a lot cheaper.

Hi James,

I feel it only fair to advise against drilling holes in your hips and shoulders - whilst this will certainly "soften them up a bit" it will subsequently make it harder to perform tasks such as hauling in the anchor, operating the tiller and disembarking when coming alongside!

Have you run this idea past Margaret yet - you may find that she is less keen than you? As for partially drilling through from the bottom, well...that would have to be a decision left to yourselves!

But to be fair, it isn't the sort of thing that I've tried before!!

Perhaps I'll try drilling the holes in the cushion instead as you think Heads and shoulders a bit iffy!

Reading up a bit about shaping cushions, it seams a hot wire if often recommended, which may mean that a drill will have some difficulty in penetrating foam, so maybe heads and shoulders it is then.

Hi James

We bought a "V berth" shaped matress protector and bedding at the boat show from shipshapebedding:

It is much better than sleeping bags and it gives the cushions much more comfort. You might find you don't have to do anything to your cushions.

Hi James,

We also find our bunk cushions a bit hard after a while, but I think it is that they are to thin rather than to hard. I think you would be better with more cushioning rather than less. However, If you come up with a solution that improves things, please let me know.

Thanks for your feedback John and Graham

We have a latex (Dunlopillo) mattress at home, much softer than the boat cushions and not much deeper and find that much more ocmfortable. You can get replacement latex (or even memory) foam cushions from a place in Bristol, however they are quite expensive so I thought I might try the holes first on one cushion, and if it ruined it get a replacement Latex mattress. Will let you know what happens
