I am thinking about adding an autohelm to our 235. I am sure that many of you have already done this. I would appreciate any hints on choice of gear, how best to fit it and perhaps any traps/pitfalls that I should avoid!

Many Thanks.

Brian, Re conversion yesterday at rutland water
If you went for a simrad you will need a 90mm push rod extension and a 90mm pedestal bracket.
Hope you enjoyed your sail as much as we did, a bit blustery at times,a couple of times i saw you i could have antifouled your keel.

Hello Brian,

There is an earlier thread on this with some helpful replies: http://www.parkerseal.org.uk/bbs/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1087 .

I fitted a Raymarine ST1000+. I mounted it on the cockpit coaming, port side. I can confirm that it needed the 5-inch push-rod extension, D007. You'll also need a pedestal socket but the length depends on whether you have the extended rudder stock or not. My boat doesn't, so I needed (I think) the shortest pedestal (about 1.5 inches).

I found that my boat was missing the reiforcement under the port coaming, so I had to epoxy in a piece of plywood (which involves wriggling into the cockpit locker).

The pedestal fitting is slightly too big in diameter to fit on the top of the coaming for a neat finish. I made some little fillets for it from black acetal plastic, which was the trickiest part of the job!
