I intend to fit an autopilot and I'd like to know how they're usually fitted on the 235. There are various extension tubes and brackets available that might allow it to be mounted on the seat or the cockpit coaming, under the tiller or over the tiller. If the pin is fitted on top of the tiller, how is the tiller extension accommodated? Presumably an under-tiller bracket would foul the engine when raised? Any advice?

Fitted on cockpit coaming,over the top with a 90mm push rod extension
and 90mm pedesstal bracket.

I put some packing under the tiller extension stowage clip,then the
push rod fits between the tiller extension and the tiller.
Hope this helps if not ill take some photos next time i go to boat.

Just a thought
You may not need the 90mm pedestal bracket,because later 235 have a
longer rudder stock so the engine can be lifted out of the water.

I fitted the Raymarine ST1000 to my 235. I needed a 5" pushrod extension(Part no D007)that Bill Parker told me to buy.I drilled a hole in the bottom of the tiller extension to accomodate the pin that protrudes on top of the tiller. When the tillerpilot is attached, the extension is loose or it can be fastened down with shock-cord. It fastened straight onto the coaming without the need for any brackets, so the overall installation is clean and tidy. It took Peter (Zephyr) and myself about 2 hours to install fully. Thanks to both of you. That's all clear. I'm interested in the extended rudder stock, which I've read about before, because I would like to be able to lift the engine clear of the water while sailing - I can currently only sit it on the cavitation plate, so I can't fit the hull plug. I might modify my rudder stock later or, perhaps, get a curved tiller made. It's good to know the necessary pedestal is available for the autopilot to accommodate that modification.

The factory fitted Autopilot for the original rudder stock was the ST1000, with a D007 5" extension, the mounting cup was fitted directly into the portside combing, a reinforcing block was fitted to all 235s in this area , later 235s with the extended stock will also need a D030 89mm pedestal socket which is bolted on the top of the Portside combing bringing the autopilot to the correct height, the tiller pin was fitted on the top of the tiller 18" from the stock pivot point, and extra packing under the tiller extension clip to clear the pin.

Just to add to the chat, I fitted an St1000 , with extension, to the cockpit coaming, using a bracket under the tiller. This meant that I didn't need a pedestal, on the other hand, the clearance to the top of the engine is tight, and if someone sits on the tiller the engine cover gets scratched. However this is not a problem so far as working the autopilot goes.

Forgot to add that the ST1000 will need recalibrating to Portside operation, as Raymarine default is Starboard, its only a matter of holding down the two buttons for 10 secs, Please refer to Raymarine manual or website, (factory fitted ST1000 were recalibrated at installation.)

I want to fit a Raymarine ST2000 to my Parker 235 (2003), but wondered if anyone might have done this before and have any advice/photos before I start drilling holes?

Hello John,

The ST2000 is identical in form to the ST1000, so fitting it is exactly as described by 'Bob' in this thread. The only difference I found was that the reinforcing block was missing from the coaming in my boat (hull 002) so I had to epoxy a plywood pad in place, but with a later boat you might be in luck with that.

One tip to note: in selecting a position for the cable socket, keep it as far from the engine as possible. I initially fitted it in the side of the cockpit seat, beside the engine, and I sometimes experienced electromagnetic interference from the engine at certain revs. I moved the socket and cable run to the coaming, beneath the autopilot's pivot pin, and that fixed it.
